AUKUS

This is a mock-up example of a commentary article, which ought to be a piece of proffessional standard journalism that tracks a discussion started by the lead article, in this case by Hugh White, as replies to it turn up in other publications. In this case there is a reply by Paul Dibb, which is not a direct reply to the original, but has some relevance according the commentator's interpretation. Being a mock-up, the byline is fictional and the analysis should not be taken seriously

Hugh White sees several problems with the AUKUS program. The most fundamental one is that he has already written off the USA in its contest with China and in a situation where we have to make the best of that, numerous small submarines are a better choice than a few huge ones. White is a defence expert and there are others who will take him on, but in the case of Paul Dibb's reply, they are disputing something that he agrees with.
